I found this article in the Houston Chronicle last December, about a homeless woman, Ms. Cleo, who died here in Houston.

Mitzvah Day is a day in our synagogue where we go to do good deeds in many parts of Houston. I felt so proud because I could help. This was the first time I gave away socks and it will definitely not be the last.
